What is a Medium Width Shoe?

Different shoe brands tend to use different systems of measurement and different notations for sizes, so it can be incredibly confusing.
Simply put, a medium width shoe is typically a standard size shoe. Shoes generally come in three widths: extra narrow, narrow, standard/medium, wide, and extra wide. For women, the medium shoe width is B width shoes. For men and kids, however, a B width shoe is a narrow shoe, and the medium is a shoe width D. For women, D width shoes are considered wide shoes.
While the difference between shoe widths is a scant few millimeters, it can be worth sizing up for a much-needed boost of comfort.

When your shoes are too small, it’s never a comfortable feeling—no matter how long you try to break them in, an ill-fitting shoe will always be an ill-fitting shoe. If you feel like your feet are being pinched, your go-to solution might be immediately sizing up. However, this isn’t the best thing to do—the extra length in the toe box or the heel can lead to chafing, blisters, and clumsy accidents (e.g. tripping or changing your gait). It’s best to find a shoe that fits both the length and width of your feet.
If you have any pairs of shoes that show visible bulging or stretching on the outsides of the forefoot area (near your toes and the ball of your foot), it’s a good sign that you need additional width. While the medium width is the standard size, you might have opted for a narrow width shoe or are simply using medium width shoes that haven’t been engineered for comfort. Different shoe companies tend to follow different sizing standards, so finding the right size can be a headache and a half. The medium width shoe measurement even differs between men and women. You’ll often find yourself wondering “What is the difference between medium and wide width shoes?”

Generally, the more A’s or E’s you find in a size, the narrower or wider the shoe will be. Shoes with particularly wide sizes (e.g. 9E, 10E, 14E) are therapeutic shoes meant mainly for diabetics, who need specialized support.
The best way to get your foot measured is by heading to your nearest shoe store and looking for their Brannock device, which is a metal measuring plate you can set your foot on. Alternatively, you can try measuring your feet at home with a pen and paper. Trace the outline of your foot and use a ruler to measure the longest and widest parts of your foot. Afterward, look up the Brannock size chart and compare it with your measurements.

1.) Tape a sheet of plain paper to the floor with one end against a wall, 2.) Put your foot on the paper with your heel flush against the wall, 3.) Trace the outline of your foot, 4.) Use a ruler to measure the longest and widest parts of the outline in centimeters, and 5.) Compare measurements with the Brannock size chart
